Upcoming PhD thesis defence on a pioneering automated national-scale UBEM

On 5 December 2025 at 10:00, Carlos Beltrán Velamazán, researcher at the Built4Life Lab, will defend his PhD thesis in the Sala de Grados of the Torres Quevedo Building at the School of Engineering and Architecture (Río Ebro Campus, University of Zaragoza). The thesis has been supervised by Belinda López-Mesa and Marta Monzón-Chavarrías within the PhD Programme New Territories in Architecture.

The thesis, entitled “Urban Building Energy Modelling Based on Open Data and AI for the Assessment of the European Building Stock: The Case of Spain”, presents a fully automated methodology for building a national-scale UBEM (Urban Building Energy Model).

The examination committee will comprise Dr Madelyn Marrero Meléndez (University of Seville) as Chair, Dr José Paulo Duarte de Almeida (University of Coimbra) as committee member, and Dr Raquel Trillo Lado (University of Zaragoza) as Secretary.

The defence of this research will mark an important milestone in the advancement of large-scale urban building energy modelling and the development of tools to support the energy transition, building stock renovation and sustainable urban planning. We hope you can join us.
