Publication of the Book Assessing Progress in Decarbonizing Spain’s Building Stock: Indicators and Data Availability

We are pleased to announce the publication of the book Assessing Progress in Decarbonizing Spain’s Building Stock: Indicators and Data Availability, published by Springer Nature as an open-access volume, providing free and unlimited access to researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public.

The book reflects a significant part of the research carried out within the LocalREGEN project, whose objective has been to develop methodologies and indicators to evaluate and monitor the progress of residential renovation strategies and the decarbonization of the building stock in Spain. Building on a life-cycle perspective and a multi-criteria assessment approach, the research addresses the need for robust monitoring frameworks capable of supporting evidence-based decision-making at local, regional, and national levels.

One of the main contributions of the book is the identification and analysis of the renovation and decarbonization indicators proposed by the European Union, particularly those included in EU Recommendation 2019/786 and in the recast proposal of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). By examining the availability and quality of existing data sources, the publication provides practical guidance for measuring progress towards climate-neutral and energy-efficient building stocks.

The book also offers state-of-the-art knowledge on building renovation assessment, decarbonization monitoring, and housing-stock management. It discusses the challenges associated with data collection, indicator development, and policy evaluation, while proposing methodologies that can help administrations and stakeholders understand the effectiveness of their renovation strategies and identify opportunities for improvement.

As an outcome of the LocalREGEN project, the publication contributes to advancing research and practice in the field of sustainable buildings and energy transition. It highlights the importance of combining technical, environmental, social, and economic indicators to achieve a comprehensive understanding of renovation progress and its broader impacts on society.
